Outdoor Activities

Many people think of golf when they think of Scotland and there are no less than eight golf courses within half-an-hour’s drive of Glenholme  and the Rookery.

For those with an interest in horses, there are a number of equestrian and pony-trekking centres.

There is excellent game and coarse fishing in local lochs and throughout the whole Dee river system from the headwaters to the estuary. Trout, pike, roach and perch are among the most common catches. Salmon stocks are conserved rather than fished. Permits are required.

Cycling and mountain-biking is an activity which has seen rapid growth in recent years. The 7Stanes is a network of bike trails which cover southern Scotland. Kirkcudbright is within easy reach of five of the 7Stanes trails and there is also the wonderful Red Kite Trail which runs for 20 miles through Galloway Forest Park.
